Prof. Michael Reid from University of Canterbury, New Zealand visited Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM) at the invitation of the CAS Key Laboratory of Design and Assembly of Functional Nanostructures during the period of Jan. 14-20, 2018. He delivered three seminar reports on the topic “Electronic Structure Calculations for Lanthanide Materials” and “High-resolution spectroscopy of CaF2:Eu3+ nanoparticles: Investigation of the defect distribution in biomedical imaging materials” on Jan. 16 and Jan. 18, respectively. Prof. Reid also carried out academic exchange with the research staff of FJIRSM during his stay in Fuzhou. Prof. Reid studied at the University of Canterbury and obtained his PhD in Physics in 1981. He spent three years at the Department of Chemistry, University of Virginia, and seven years the Department of Physics, University of Hong Kong, before returning to New Zealand in 1993. His research interests are focused on the spectroscopy and electronic structure of lanthanide-doped materials, and he has authored over 160 journal articles and several book chapters.
