Structural Chemistry is one of the key research areas in FJIRSM since it was founded in 1960 by the late academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Professor Lu Jia Xi, the well-known scientist and educationist of China. Through the efforts for near fifty years, the research of Structural Chemistry in the laboratory has extensive international influence. Fundamental Structure Research laboratory was founded in 2001. The main current research areas in the laboratory are the fundamental structural chemistry, including the application of new functional materials based on structural chemistry, the relationship between structure and properties of materials,and directing the research of new function materials.

The director of Fundamental Structure Research laboratory is Professor Dr Guo-Cong Guo. It is currently organized into seven research groups, including seven professors and PhD Candidate Supervisors, four supported by National Outstanding Youth Foundation, They are presiding in several research projects from National Natural Science Foundation of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Fujian Province and so on.
