Prof. Mercouri Kanatzidis, Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Solid State Chemistry, from Northwestern University, Evanston, USA, visited Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM) at the invitation of the State Key Laboratory of Structural Chemistry on September 13th, 2012. During his stay, Prof. Kanatzidis delivered a seminar report entitled “Nanostructured Thermoelectrics and Beyond”, and carried out detailed discussion with the research staff of FJIRSM.
Prof. Mercouri Kanatzidis got his Ph.D with the mjor in inorganic chemistry at the University of Iowa in 1984. Now he is one of the professors of chemistry at Northwestern University and a senior scientist of Argonne National Laboratory, Materials Science Division, Argonne, USA. His main research interests focus on inorganic chemistry, solid state and molecular chemistry of metal chalcogenides, conducting polymers, intercalation chemistry and bioinorganic chemistry. For his outstanding scientific achievements, Prof. Kanatzidis has ever got many awards including Presidential Young Investigator Award, National Science Foundation, 1989-1994; ACS Inorganic Chemistry Division Award, EXXON Faculty Fellowship in Solid State Chemistry, 1990; Michigan State University Distinguished Faculty Award, 1998; and Alexander von Humboldt Prize, 2003. On some well-known international scholastic journals, Prof. Kanatzidis has already published over 700 research papers, which have been cited for more than 19000 times with the H index of 68.
