Prof. WU Wei from Xiamen University and Prof. MO Yirong from Western Michigan University visited Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM) at the invitation of the State Key Laboratory of Structural Chemistry on June 9th, 2014. While staying at FJIRSM, Prof. WU and Prof. MO delivered seminar reports entitled “The Nature of Chemical Bonding: Computational Methods and Their Applications” and “Intermolecular Interaction Analysis: Blue-Shifting Hydrogen Bonds and sigma-Hole Halogen Bonds”, respectively, and carried out detailed discussion with the research staff at FJIRSM.

Prof. WU Wei received his B.Sc. (1983) and M.Sc. (1986) in physics and his Ph.D. (1990) in theoretical chemistry from Xiamen University with Prof. ZHANG Qianer. From 1992 to 1994, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow with Roy McWeeny at the University of Pisa, and then he went back to Xiamen University as an Associate Professor. In 1995, he became Professor, and he is currently the director of the Institute of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry. He was appointed as a Changjiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education of China in 2004. His research fields focus on the methodology developments in quantum chemistry, especially in ab initio valence bond theory and its implementation. He authored the XIAMEN and XMVB softwares. Since 1999, he has teamed with Prof. Sason Shaik and Prof. Philippe Hiberty in the Long VB March.

Prof. MO Yirong received his B.S. in 1986 and Ph.D. in 1992 from Xiamen University on the ab initio valence bond theory with Prof. ZHANG Qianer. He was a DAAD Visiting Fellow with Paul Schleyer and a Humboldt Research Fellow with Sigrid Peyerimhoff in 1996−1997. In 1998, he joined the group of Prof. GAO Jiali as a research associate until 2001. After working as a computational biochemist at Xencor for 1 year, he moved to the Western Michigan University in 2002, where he is presently an Assistant Professor of Chemistry. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Xiamen University. His main research fields focus on chemical bond theory and its implementation and molecular dynamics study in biosystem.
