Dr. Myung-Hwan Whangbo, a world-famous theoretical chemist and distinguished professor from North Carolina State University, USA, visited Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM) at the invitation of the State Key Laboratory of Structural Chemistry during the period of September 23rd to October 1st, 2016. While staying at FJIRSM, Prof. Whangbo delivered two lectures entitled “Effect of Spin-orbit Coupling: Spin Orientation and Spin-half Misconception” and “Effect of Spin-orbit Coupling: Spin Orientation, Mott insulating state and spin exchange”, respectively. During his stay, he also carried out many discussions with the research staff of FJIRSM on various topics such as magnetism, superconductivity, optical materials etc.

Prof. Myung-Hwan Whangbo finished his PhD at Queen's University in Canada. He has published many original important research papers on physical and chemical top magazines such as Nature Materials, Science, PRL, JACS, etc. So far, his works have been cited by more than 23000 times with an H-index=71.  He has won numerous awards, such as Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award (1995), Ho-Am Prize for Basic Science (1999), Alumni Association Outstanding Research Award (twice in1999 and 2000, respectively).
