On October 20, 2026, Professor Panče Naumov from New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), United Arab Emirates, visited Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM), Chinese Academy of Sciences. During his visit, Professor Naumov delivered a Lu Jiaxi Lecture entitled “Dynamic Organic Crystals”.
Professor Naumov introduced the distinctive properties and development of organic molecular crystals, highlighting their remarkable mechanical adaptability and rapid responses to external stimuli, including light, heat, and humidity. He discussed how these properties enable molecular crystals to function as responsive materials for sensing, signal transduction, and other emerging technologies. He also presented advances in crystal adaptronics, an interdisciplinary research field that investigates the dynamic and adaptive behavior of crystalline materials.
Professor Panče Naumov is a tenured Professor of Chemistry at NYUAD, Global Network Professor of Chemistry at New York University, and Director of the Center for Smart Engineering Materials. He received his BSc from Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Macedonia and his PhD in Chemistry and Materials Science from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, in 2004. Before joining NYU in 2012, he held research and academic positions at the National Institute for Materials Science, Osaka University, and Kyoto University in Japan. His research focuses on solid-state chemistry, crystallography, crystal engineering, photochemistry, and smart materials. He has pioneered the field of crystal adaptronics, advancing the understanding of mechanically responsive organic crystals, including shape-memory, superelastic, and self-healing materials. Professor Naumov is a member of the Mohamed Bin Rashid Academy of Scientists, the European Academy of Sciences, and the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He is also a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry, and serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society. His honors include the Human Frontier Science Program Award, the Asian and Oceanian Photochemistry Association Prize, the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award, the Radcliffe Fellowship at Harvard University, and the Hans and Marlies Zimmer International Scholar Award.
