Prof. Peter J. Stang Visits FJIRSM

Prof. Peter J. Stang, editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Chemical Society, from the University of Utah, USA, visited Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM) at the invitation of the State Key Laboratory of Structural Chemistry on May 29th, 2011. During his stay, Prof. Stang delivered a seminar report entitled “Abiological Self-Assembly: Predesigned Metallacycles and Metallacages via Coordination” and carried out detailed discussion about the application prospects of molecular design, coordination self-assembly, molecular rings and cages with the research staff of FJIRSM. Nearly 300 researchers including Prof. HONG Maochun, director of FJIRSM and Prof. CAO Rong, deputy director of FJIRSM, took part in the seminar.

At present, Prof. Stang is a distinguished professor with the University of Utah, USA. He became a member of National Academy of Sciences and the fellow of American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2000. He was elected the Foreign Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2006 and of Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2007. Since 2002, he has been the editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Prof. Stang is mainly engaged in the researches on supramolecular self-assembly. He has made many significant contributions to the fields of coordination chemistry, organometallic chemistry and hypervalent iodine chemistry. Meanwhile, he is also one of the scientists whose research papers were most frequently cited in the fields of molecular assembly and molecular building. He has received numerous important awards, including ACS F.A. Cotton Medal for Excellence in Chemical Research, ACS Paul G. Gassman Award for outstanding achievements, Fred Basolo Award for distinguished researches on inorganic chemistry, ACS Linus Pauling Medal, ACS Award for Creative Research and Applications of Iodine Chemistry, and the Utah State S&T Award.
