Prof. George Gokel from University of Missouri, USA, visited Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM) at the invitation of the State Key Laboratory of Structural Chemistry during the period of August 20th to 21th, 2014. On the morning of August 20th, Prof. Gokel delivered a seminar report entitled “Chemical Function and Biological Activity of Synthetic Amphiphiles” and shared his experience on research, teaching, as well as consulting service. Professor George Gokel attended Tulane University, New Orleans, LA, (B.S. chemistry, 1968), University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, (Ph.D. chemistry with I. K. Ugi, 1971) and UCLA, where he did a postdoctoral fellowship with D.J. Cram (1972-1974). He served on the faculty at Penn State, Maryland and Miami prior to heading the Program in Chemical Biology, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis. He joined UM-St. Louis as Distinguished Professor in 2006 and also serves as the Director of the Center for Nanoscience. His research uses synthetic organic chemistry to prepare novel compounds that serve as supramolecular receptors or function as more complex natural molecules. He won the prestigious Izatt-Christensen International Award in Macrocyclic Chemistry in 1996.
