Prof. Jon-Paul Wells from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, visited Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM) at the invitation of the Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials Chemistry and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on December 3rd 2014. While staying at FJIRSM, Prof. Jon-Paul Wells delivered a seminar report entitled “Spectroscopy with Free Electron Lasers”, and carried out detailed discussion with the research staff at FJIRSM. Prof. Jon-Paul Wells finished his PhD in laser spectroscopy of rare earth doped optoelectronic materials in 1997. He spent March 1997 - Feb 1999 at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow (UK) where femtosecond pump-probe techniques were performed with the broad objective of understanding non-radiative processes in near infrared emitters. From June 2002 until June 2006, he held a lectureship in ultrafast semiconductor physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Sheffield, working on some rather diverse problems in the physics of optoelectronic materials. In August 2006, he returned to New Zealand to lead the ring laser group at Canterbury. His research interests include UC research profile, ring lasers, interferometry and applications, optoelectronic materials, and free electron laser spectroscopy. So far he has published more than 130 research papers on some famous scientific journals including Phys. Rev. Lett., Phys. Rev. B and Opt. Lett..
