ERIC.png

Prof. Eric Anslyn from the University of Texas at Austin, who also serves as an associate editor of Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS), visited Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM) at the invitation of the State Key Laboratory of Structural Chemistry on May 15th, 2015. Prof. Anslyn delivered a teaching seminar entitled “Supramolecular Chemistry and Chemical Sensing” as well as a research seminar entitled “Differential Sensing, Concepts and Applications”. In short, Prof. Anslyn demonstrated the exploitation of principles and strategies of physical organic and supramolecular chemistry for sensor design and illustrated the application of differential sensing with the discrimination of protein kinases, glycerides, as well as wines. He also shared his experience on research, teaching, as well as consulting service, with faculty members and graduate students.

Prof. Eric Anslyn received his PhD in Organic Chemistry in 1987 at the California Institute of Technology under the direction of Prof. Robert Grubbs.  From that year to 1989 he was a National Science Foundation post-doctoral Associate at Columbia University working with Prof. Ronald Breslow.  He started his independent career at the University of Texas at Austin in 1989. He is currently the Welch Regents Chair of Chemistry and a University Distinguished Teaching Professor. Prof. Anslyn’s research involves the use of physical organic chemistry principles in the development of enzyme mimics and synthetic receptors. Prof. Anslyn has been recognized with a variety of research and teaching awards, such as Izatt-Christensen Award in Supramolecular Chemistry, the ACS Edward Leete Award for Excellence in Teaching and Research, and the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award. He is an elected member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  He is also the co-author with Dr. Dennis Dougherty of the graduate textbook Modern Physical Organic Chemistry.
